C.B. Squirrel and the Callaway Kids
Bank
One bright fall morning C.B. Squirrel awakened
slowly from a long sleep in his cozy oak tree nest.
He opened one eye, then the other. Then
he unfurled his bushy tail from around his nose, rose out
of a furry ball and stretched his body so long it forced a
sunny smile onto his shiny black lips. After giving each leg
a quick shake for morning exercise, he scampered off to wash
his face in the fountain bath he shared with all the birds
in the neighborhood.
C.B. greeted all the people and animals
he saw along the way. "Tsk, Tsk, Tsk. Good morning, Mr.
Mailman! Nice day, isn't it?"
"Tsk, Tsk. Hi, there Papergirl! What's
the news today?"
He chatted with everyone he met until he
got to the fountain.
Buddy Bluebird met him there.
"Hey, C.B. shake a leg," said
he.
"Already did that," C.B. chuckled.
"Four times, thank you."
"I'm serious, C.B. C'mon. The kids
are waiting."
"The kids," he thought.
"No wonder the sun awakened me
so early today. I wasn't just dreaming again. Today is the
day The Callaway Kids Bank becomes real."
C. B. remembered the plan he and his friend
Will had made on that hot summer day so long ago. Will and
C.B. had worked very hard that year and for many years after
that until Will was a very old man. Enchanted and immortal
C.B., remembering his promise to his dear friend to teach
all the children in the county the Lesson of the Acorn, had
continued to work until this glorious day with two generations
of Will's family.
"That's right!" C.B. squealed
in delight. "Just let me smooth down my fur and we'll
be off to the bank, Buddy!"
"What a glorious, glorious day,"
he sang as he ran down the street to tell all the children
about The Callaway Kids Bank and how they could have fun saving
their nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars. He had even convinced
his human pals to give the kids one of his magic acorns when
they brought their money to the bank.
C.B. had been given the acorns by a silver
fairy who waved her golden wand and put a spell on them.
"These fine nuts I
give to thee,
will want to have more company.
They will stick to the tree
and to friend C.B.,
until there number reaches fifty.
"Then the acorns you
do hold,
when brought to the bank by one so bold,
will churn and turn and quickly mold,
into a gift each child can hold."
When C.B. got to the bank he was so happy,
he danced as he greeted each young person who was there. He
shuffled to the left and pointed his bony little fingers to
the sky thanking the sun for waking him up on this wonderful
day.
"Oooh," the kids shouted. "Look,
it's C.B.!"
C.B. was so flattered that the kids liked
him, he shuffled to the right and pointed to the sky again.
"Yeah, C.B.!" the kids laughed.
"Do it again.
C.B. was so excited he hopped up, turned
around and kept dancing until all the kids were doing what
they called "The C.B. Shuffle" around the bank.
C.B. was happy. He knew the lessons he and
Will had dreamed about teaching so long ago -- both silly
and serious -- were about to be learned by the children at
their very own bank.
The furry little savings squirrel knew that
even though there were many children at the opening day of
The Callaway Kids Bank, there were many more who wanted to
see him and learn the Lesson of the Acorn. So, leaving his
friends at the bank he set off to travel the county to visit
with the children.
He went to the schools and he went to the
ball fields. He went to grand openings and he went to fairs
and he went to festivals. He even went to the hospitals and
to the fishing holes to encourage kids to save their money.
But, travel as he did, he always returned
to the bank for the holidays. When he came back, his friends
there were so happy to see him they invited all the new Kids
Bank members for a party.
C.B. enjoyed his work so much he vowed he
would always be there for children who want to learn more
about saving and growing for the future.
And, to this very day, kids look for C.B.
